Return To Ground Zero

How time changes the present into the past. My wife still works at the hospital mentioned in the very first post, still doesn’t enjoy it most days (due to immature co-workers, not the job itself), and I am no longer employed by the hotel I worked for. In truth, it has been time to move on for quite awhile now — I simply was not paying attention to the signs.

Perhaps the most difficult thing to remember on a day-to-day basis is that ultimately, wealth is not everything. Odd to bring up on this particular blog, but it seems that those who have this mindset (along with several others, of course) end up very wealthy indeed. Wealth, to them, is not simply obsessing over growing their bank account at all costs, it also entails meaningful relationships, physical health, and so on.

Our favorite approach lately has been that of Dave Ramsey, for the down-to-earth, cannot-fail, common-sense views and advice he liberally distributes. Famous for his ” Baby Steps”, we have determined to follow exactly that path. Never making payments on anything else ever again is a fantastic goal to work towards, and a great tool to building wealth.

So, although our path was made longer when I lost my job, my wife will tell you that we are both happier, less stressed, and our faith in the unseen is made stronger. While we may be coming rapidly to the end of our savings at the moment, we remain trusting that the right opportunity will present itself at the right time. At that point, we will pick up where we left off and begin making rapid strides through the Baby Steps.

What Are Your Demands?

The other day I watched a lady check out of a hotel. She was unhappy on the outside (ie. clearly did not take care of herself) and the inside (angry at herself and the world around her). You can almost spot this kind of personality a mile away. She proceeded to complain of a faulty shower and stood expectantly waiting a refund or discount.

First off, I’m not new to travel or hotels, and the time to bring up a problem with your room is when it happens, not the morning of checkout. Any front desk clerk or manager worth their salt will have no problem moving you to a different room right away, and this hotel was nowhere close to full.

Secondly, her reservation was made through a “third-party” company — Travelocity, Priceline, Orbitz, Hotwire, Expedia, or similar. Those reservations are pre-paid before the guest even arrives, which means the hotel could not issue a discount if they wanted to. The guest’s card is charge ahead of time, and the hotel then bills the third-party company. So what was this woman really after?

Sadly, such stories are not uncommon. Greediness, selfishness, and a nasty streak of arrogance are prevalent in today’s society, and it seems the disease is only spreading. Rooms on third party websites can be had at decent hotels for very little money these days ($40 a night or less!), so where is the valuation of such purchases? What are you as a consumer expecting in a hotel for that kind of money?

It seems that we as an American culture especially seem to value price over quality, and have for years. Fake bling is everywhere, as the appearance of wealth takes precedent over actual wealth. Paying $40 for a hotel room will get you a considerably different experience than $400 per night, but how many are willing or able to save up and spring for the more expensive but much nicer room? Even the able are seldom willing.

While growing up, we were indoctrinated in the art of pinching pennies, shopping at cheap stores, and generally exercising frugality. I will be honest and say that it wasn’t much fun . . . materialism usually wins every time. Over the years I’ve learned that inexpensive is not at all the better option in many cases. Buying a cheap pair of pants from Wal-Mart does not mean you got a better deal than a pair from CK or Guess, it simply means you paid less, but the cheaper pair will likely wear out much sooner . . . meaning you’ll have to go back and get another pair soon.

My goal in the next week or two, amidst all the chaos of packing to move and several other projects, is to seriously consider the limits of wealth and spending. At what point is lavish consumption excessive? Is a $500 or $1000 hotel room necessarily that much better than a $150 room? How many luxury cars or homes are too many? If a family has 6 cars and a 5000-square-foot house on the oceanfront, are they living in gross excess? I’ve seen multi-millionaires driving $3000 Jeeps around daily, and broke people laughably trying to maintain minimum payments on a Lexus to keep up appearances.

To Be Perfectly Frank

I would say the best mix of helpful, real-world, non-sales advice we’ve come across as far as wealth gurus or authors are concerned would be Frank McKinney. Not only does he build spectacular mansions on spec (meaning without a buyer in place), but he is honest, upfront, and won’t try to flush out your wallet with smoke and mirrors.

Not only that, he strongly believes in giving back — his Caring House Project Foundation, originally set up to provide inexpensive housing and amenities to needy families in Haiti, has been working nonstop there in light of recent events. All profits from book sales and other events go towards this cause, which is a great testimony to Mr. McKinney’s character.

It’s all too easy for these types of folks to come at you with instant wealth recipes (Robert Allen) or generic, vague catchphrases (Donald “Think Big” Trump) that really relate very little to the average person. I guess that’s kind of harsh, I actually like Trump quite a bit, and his attention to detail and quality, like Frank’s, is admirable and inspirational. However, Mr. McKinney delves a bit more deeply into your character, and applies every lesson taught to your personal life.

Every wealth guru or auther features a “rags-to-riches” story, designed to hook the reader, and Frank is no different — but he won’t use it to take your money or try and fool you in any way. Indeed, all the content he delivers — through books, speaking and of course his mansions — speaks volumes about his sincerity to help and advise aspiring entrepreneurs and people in all walks of life. Pick up one of his books today (a donation to CHPF will also get you his personal signature), you won’t regret it.

Who Is Your Greatest Enemy?

I will be honest, for me, its . . . me. Perfect example: for over 10 years I have had a concept in my head and on paper to create two great music albums. More than TEN YEARS, that’s over a decade. So, why have they not been created? I’ve had more than enough opportunities, and enough time to spare (if I’m honest).

Two answers — procrastination and laziness. I’m easily distracted sometimes, and sitting around watching a movie or what have you is way more tempting than actually having to think or work. Writing music is and has been my life’s dream, so why do I prevent myself from following my passion?

Everyone has enemies, and I would submit to you that your enemies are holding you back. Once upon a time, I learned that one difference between the achievers and everybody else is the Razor’s Edge, that one thing that separates two worlds. Whatever your enemy is, that’s what prevents you from seeing the other side.

The last two nights are also prime examples for me. What I needed to be doing was working on rewiring my car. It’s a mess and in pieces, and needs fixing like now. I think I put in maybe 30 minutes of work on the wiring, and several hours munching on food and watching House. Now that’s a great show, but how much time did I waste being lazy?

I have become aware that we spend most of our time doing things that are comfortable to us. What feels comfortable to you? Lately, for us, it has been eating pizza and ice cream and sitting in front of a screen. For the past 10 years, I’ve felt very comfortable not creating an amazing album or three. Why is it so hard to break out of the Comfort Zone?

So today my goal is to begin making myself uncomfortable. Most of the masses I see every day have no concept of this idea. Re-evaluating your relationships with others — uncomfortable. Beginning to work out — uncomfortable. Starting a business — extremely uncomfortable. How comfortable are you?

Our So-Called Life, Part II

Our first real attention-grabbing exposure to any kind of wealth “guru” that we really connected with was Robert “Rich Dad” Kiyosaki. Now, there are a great many supporters of his out there, but because being in the limelight makes you a bigger target for haters, there are also those who slam his every move.

I’m not going to review all his books, most of which we read voraciously at the time, or critique each viewpoint he sets out. You either love him, hate him, or have never heard of him. It took us a few years of life’s lessons to understand that every expert out there needs to be taken with a grain of salt, Robert included.

However, the ideas presented, in their most basic form, sparked a level of interest and new understanding in us that had never seen the light of day before. Passive income became our goal, and ultimately still is, to this day. Of course, “passive” has many understood definitions, which don’t necessarily coincide with the image painted by many as “earned without lifting a finger”.

We knew we wanted a different life than that of a basic employee, that much was certain. However, step one was putting a plan in place . . . a plan which has changed countless times since those days. It is a plan still in progress, in fact, as today we are both still employees, although simply with higher paychecks. But the dream lives on.

The Rich Dad series is an amazing eye-opener for someone who’s never considered the possibilities of life outside the “rat race”. There is a lot of false glamor associated with wealth building, most of which is flashed around by get-rich-quick scam artists. However, there is something to be said for becoming truly wealthy — security, less financial stress, and quite simply the ability to choose.

Over the years, we’ve gone on to read much more advanced material than Rich Dad, Poor Dad. However, that series will always be remembered as the concepts that opened our eyes to a world that could be, rather than the mindtrap of the world that appears to be. Other experts might be more focused, more technical, or better-suited to the different stages people fall into, but the ideas Robert presents are absolutely worth looking into.

Our So-Called Life, Part I

My wife and I both come from middle-class suburbia. Neither of us were taught much, if anything, about money — apart from “Credit cards are of the devil!” and “SAVE! SAVE! SAVE!”. We, like most Americans, never gave it much thought, except to note that it quickly runs out. I guess Robert Kiyosaki would not approve.

A year after marrying (and being forced to spend all our honeymoon funds and savings on hotel rooms while waiting for housing availability), we finally took a proper honeymoon in the Smokies. My wife surprised me with a week-long stay at Timber Tops.

It came up in conversation as to the income potential if one were to own a rental cabin and utilize the Timber Tops program. We started running the numbers, and the quest for attainable wealth began. We literally started taking up residence at Borders.

Oddly enough, our knowledge increased at a much higher rate than our wealth. Come to find out, all the financial intelligence in the world does not a smart investor make. Hindsight being 20/20, of course, I would happily go back in a flash and smack myself silly for some of the ridiculous purchases we’ve made.

But, learning from mistakes is part of what makes great people great. For example, we will never again make payments on a car — or anything else, for that matter . . . including our next house. Nor will we ever purchase an American-made car, or a house that needs more time and attention than we can give it.

But, those are personal preferences, and of course everyone’s situation is different. This is one reason why Dave Ramsey’s advice may not apply to the same person that Donald Trump’s advice might be better for. Plenty of advice is out there, ready to lead well-meaning folks astray. In future articles I hope to delve into some of that and hopefully clear away some confusion.

Ground Zero

I’m typing this in the cafeteria of the hospital where my wife works, waiting for her to get off work at 1:00am so we can go home. Our story is not a “scraping-the barrel’s-bottom” tale, although we have found ourselves at some fairly weighty lows at times.

We have pursued wealth, with varying degrees of persistance and varying degrees of success, since we married five years ago. Various financial experts at one point or other promised to be our guiding light to the promised land of happiness.

If there is any one single greatest lesson we’ve learned, it may well be that everything one might hear or read about wealth needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Quite often as to the source’s motives or agenda, but also as to whether this advice applies to your individual circumstances or not.

So, this is our journey to finding the truth about wealth and wealth-building, something we feel is missing in today’s advertising, sales and media. There is no hidden agenda here other than to educate you the reader, and no intentions of springing and “introductory info kit” when you’re looking the other way. No tricks, no gimmicks, just . . . an honest outlook. How’s that for refreshing?
